Battery Backup

If your door just opens or closes when using battery backup for your PULSE 500 Series door operator, follow these steps to address the issue:

Check the push buttons:

  • Ensure the push buttons on the front of the control panel are not stuck.

Inspect the relays:

  • Damaged or stuck relays can also cause this issue.
  • Tap the battery backup relays located on the bottom left of the control board with the back of a screwdriver to unjam them.

Contact technical support:

  • If these steps do not resolve the problem, please contact technical support for further assistance.

If your door does not work on battery backup power for your PULSE 100 Series door operator, check the following steps:

For a blown battery fuse:

  • Test the fuse in the vertical black fuse holder present on the control board. If it's blown, replace it with a 6.3A Time Delay fuse.

    To remove the faulty fuse, follow the steps shown below. To replace it, simply reverse the steps.

For drained or dead batteries:

  • Test the batteries' voltage. If the voltage is low (less than 10V DC per battery), allow them to charge for 24 hours with AC power ON. Replace the batteries if they do not charge after this period.

For an improperly balanced door:

  • Conduct a BALANCE CHECK via the STARTUP MENU and adjust the door's balance as required.

For main power supply interference:

  • Unplug the unit from the main power supply to ensure the system attempts to switch to battery backup power.

For checking battery backup functionality:

  • Press the open and close buttons on the push button station and listen for a clicking sound from the relay. Ensure the push button station is working fine on power before this test. If you don’t hear the relay clicking, it may be stuck. If so, lightly tap it with the back of a screwdriver to potentially free it.

To troubleshoot a door not functioning on built-in battery backup power for your PULSE 500 Series door operator, follow these steps:

For newer units, check the circuit breaker:

  • If the door is not operating, the circuit breaker may have tripped. Locate the breaker and press the reset button on top to restore power.

For older units, inspect the inline fuse for battery backup:

  • If the fuse is blown then replace it with a fuse that has the following specifications:
    • 5mm x 20mm, time-delay/slow-blow 5A fuse.
  • Ensure you use the specified fuse to avoid further issues.

Check batteries:

  • If your door still isn't working on battery backup power, the batteries may be drained or dead.
  • Check the batteries' voltage first.
  • If it's low (less than 20V), let them charge for 24 hours with AC power ON until the batteries reach approximately 26V.
  • Replace the batteries if they are still not charged.
  • If the batteries are fully charged and the door is balanced, but the issue persists, then please contact technical support for further assistance.

Check batteries' cables:

  • Ensure that the battery backup cables are connected correctly as follows:
    • Check if the batteries are connected in series to the control board;
    • Check if cables are run from the Drive +/- terminal on the control board to the B+ and B- terminal in the junction box;
    • Check if the cables are run from B+ and B- terminals in the junction box to the Drive +/- in the drive board.

Check door balance:

  • A door not functioning on battery power may also result from a door being improperly balanced.
  • Resolve this by running BALANCE CHECK from the ADVANCED MENU, when the operator is on AC power.

Disconnect main power:

  • Check if the main power is still active.
  • To troubleshoot, disconnect the unit from the main power supply by unplugging/disconnecting it.
    This ensures the system attempts to switch to its built-in battery backup power.

Check relay:

  • Check whether the relay is clicking or not while pressing the open or close button. You should hear the relay clicking.
  • If the relay is not clicking, it might be stuck, so try to give it a gentle tap with the back of a screwdriver.
    • If the relay is still not clicking while holding the open or close button, then please contact technical support for further assistance.
  • If the relay is clicking and the blue LED above the relay is lighting up:
    • Check that the batteries have more than 20V and check for voltage coming out of Drive +/-;
    • If there is no voltage, there could be a short in the cables, so try disconnecting the cables and measuring the Drive +/- again.
    • If there is still no voltage, then it is possible that the relay is damaged.
      In that case, please contact technical support for further assistance.

The LCD screen of your PULSE 500 Series door operator doesn't work on battery backup because the battery backup system only powers the encoder to remember the door position. It does not supply power to the screen in the PULSE 500 Series.

Battery backup will only power the motor directly when OPEN/CLOSE is pressed via the Drive +/- connections on the control board.
